R.I.P. Dull, Washed-Out Heat Transfers

For many years, apparel brands and other soft goods makers have been substituting heat transfers in places where embroidered or printed labels used to be. What clients have given up for the efficiency of transfers is color, definition and other important branding features.

4-color process, also known as CMYK, works great on paper and on-screen, but getting the image onto fabric can be problematic. Differences in substrate thickness, flexibility, fabrics color or closeness to the press can create areas of the print that are too-little or too-much saturated with ink.

Our technical staff recently completed development of a heat transfer method capable of creating four-color-process images that are much sharper and durable than traditional transfers. Now, apparel makers can have the convenience of transfer application but with a photo-quality image.

Plastisol or polyvinyl chloride-based inks are not a new idea when comes to heat transfers but the method we’re using allows us to create a 100% solid ink system that produces high resolution images. The thermoplastic solution can be printed on light and dark fabrics and requires little to no drying time.

Even though the result is a highly durable transfer that can survive many dozens of washes, it has a “soft-hand” feel that could be mistaken for four-color screen printing on light garments. While we developed this transfer as an exterior locker tag it would also have application for neck labels, ascent labels and even full decoration of shirts or hats.
